Warning Signs of a Stroke

May is World Stroke Month, and it's the perfect time to learn the common warning signs of a stroke.

When someone is having a stroke, it means that their brain isn't getting the blood that it needs to survive. Because of this, acting fast is of the utmost importance. Getting help right away could prevent the stroke victim from becoming disabled or even dying. However, our long term care experts in Elk Horn know that, if you don't know what the warning signs of a stroke are, you can't possibly act on them! That is why we are celebrating World Stroke Month by providing you with the warning signs of a stroke:

#1. Face Droop

If you notice that one side of the person's face is drooping, they may be having a stroke. One easy way to look for face drooping is to have them smile.

#2. Weakness or Numbness in the Arms

If the person has numbness of weakness in one of their arms, they may be having a stroke. If you are unsure if weakness is actually present, have the person hold both of their arms up. If they can't hold one arm steady or they are unable to raise it, it's a warning sign.

#3. Speech Difficulty

Slurred speech is another common warning sign of a stroke. If you think someone is having a stroke, ask them a few simple questions. If they can't talk or seem confused, they may be having a stroke. Other warning signs may include trouble seeing or balancing, dizziness or a headache. If you think someone you love is having a stroke, call 911 immediately and try to take note of when the symptoms first began.
